Professor
On Friday, May 13th a young lady I mentor at work let me know she had a question for me. I thought it was pertaining to the bible class so I let her know my availability for the afternoon. When she came to my desk she said the following, “MaShani I have a question. I know you’re juggling a lot of plates but I wanted to know if you would ever consider being an Adjunct Professor at Pepperdine University. Based on the numbers of the freshman class my boss is looking for more professors and I told him about you. I let him know about your journaling and the webinar you did on the Power of the Pen for Grief and that you’ve been a mentor to me and I think you would be great for the students.”
I was ABSOLUTELY floored. All I could say was, “Are you kidding me???” She said, “No, but if you need time to think about it let me know. I told her, “There is nothing to think about or pray about the answer is YES!” She then shared that I would be able to create my own course and curriculum and I’ll now be part of the Pepperdine faculty.
My eye’s were bulging and my mouth had no words. How do you get asked to be a professor? I didn’t apply or even know that was an option. I have to say the Saturday before this I got a new therapist and after I told her where I worked she asked if there was a possibility of me being able to be a professor at Pepperdine. I thought for a moment and didn’t see how that could happen since I only have a Master’s degree and not a Doctorate so I told her no. She was pleasantly surprised the next week to hear I’d been offered to be an Adjunct Professor.
So, I met with the young lady’s boss that Tuesday, May 17th. When we met he shared the expectations and let me know for the Freshman Seminar they like the professors to teach from their wheelhouse. It’s like a homeroom class for college students. It helps them get acclimated to the University and build a safe space for them to meet other students while learning something that can stretch them and be used throughout their college life. I let him know I’m a strong advocate for journaling. He said he knew that because he’s been to my website. He asked if I had a name for the class. I said yes, The Power of the Pen for Self-Discovery. He absolutely loved it.
I asked if he needed my transcripts he said no he just needed my CV/Resume and a paragraph sharing my teaching experience. WHAT!!!! OMG!!! So, I update my resume and saw the following:
2018 Receptionist at Pepperdine
2019 Manager of Advancement Communications
2021 Administrative Assistant President’s Office
And now 2022 Adjunct Professor!!!!
Lisssssssttttttttttteeeeeeeennnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!! This was not on my radar but this was on the heart and mind of God for me. All of the webinars and teachings I’ve done on journaling will be curriculum at Pepperdine University. The book I wrote and self-published will be part of the required material for the class. Who gets to create their own college course based on a passion??? ME!!!!!!! I get to teach from who I am and present Tear Talk in a different way. Only God could orchestrate this. I am in awe of Him. The Gust has Gusted and I believe there is more to come. Don’t despise small beginnings. Even with degrees sometimes repositioning can bring an acceleration like you’ve never known. This was a God surprise and I can’t stop smiling. I am now Professor MaShani Allen!!! The Golden Scribe is a Professor NOW!!!!
