Conform

This week a passage we've known so well takes on new meaning as it stirs my thoughts. The passage says, “Be not conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. “(Romans 12:2) The word that is being highlighted for me is conform. What have I conformed to that I'm unaware of? How did the conforming take place? What is the process of moving from conformed to transformed? I'm not just speaking from a spiritual perspective but life in general. There are many things that I've just accepted and believed and moved on without even taking thought there may be another option or a better way. At what point do we start to consider? At what point do we begin to pry ourselves from what has always been? At what point does conformity become questionable and uncomfortable?

In this passage, the word conformed means to conform oneself, mind, and character to another's pattern. Fashion one's self according to. Wow isn't this what social media is doing to many? How scary is this to consider? Are our beliefs truly our own, or have we inherited them from societal norms, family traditions, and educational systems? Is it ok to question? What is our own thinking versus conformed thinking? Am I the only one with this train of thought who goes down these rabbit trails?

The process of transformation begins when we nurture a curiosity that stretches us beyond our comfort zones, inviting discomfort as a herald of growth. This transformation isn't limited to our spiritual lives but permeates every facet of our being. Is it not our prerogative to question? To engage in the dialogue between our thoughts and those of society? To discern where our individuality begins and conformity ends? Yet as Christians, we're called to a higher standard – a transformative journey that involves questioning the world's values and aligning ourselves with God's truth.

This Scripture isn't just a collection of words; it's a guiding light. It prompts us to embrace vulnerability, challenge societal norms, and embrace a faith-driven transformation. Let's not merely read these words; let's live them out, allowing the Holy Spirit to shape us into the image of Christ. As we do, we not only cast aside conformity but also inspire others to embark on this transformative journey of faith.
